3G sunset and OMNI upgrade to 4G
#1
3G networks will gradually shut down in the coming 1-3 years.

Does anyone know if Stromer has announced an OMNI with 4G connectivity?
Will they upgrade the existing OMNIs?

We appreciate you contribution to the swiss stromerforum. Please accept my answer in German to keep the stromerfourm.ch easy readable for the locals.

It is perhaps unclear how quickly 5G will be rolled out, but what is clear is that 3G will be shut down within the lifetime of Stromer bikes sold today. Imagine losing the geolocation and fleet functionalities in 2-3 years... unacceptable for such high end bikes.

Stromer should quickly switch to chips which can also do 4G, with 2G and 3G fallback. Some chips may also already foresee an upgrade path to 5G.

See, what David says makes sense: we dont got a Problem here in switzerland, here we get shutdown of the 2G frequences, 3G is still very much in use.
So all black and white OMNI will loose the connectivity in autum 2020, the 3G will still work for many years - at least here.

What happens in your country? and when?

Unfortunately 3G will not work for many years more in Switzerland. Actually the spectrum of 3G is reduced in favor of 4G and 5G. In Germany 3G will closed before 2G. So 2G and 3G are come to an end everywhere in Europe.

Bin ja mal gespannt was passsiert.
